Advocacy
How we get around is important, affecting our health, development, interpersonal networks, and environmental impact. Our projects and strategies focus on making the benefits of biking and walking accessible to all, putting safe and supportive infrastructure in place, and communicating why it all matters.
One of the great things about Oak Park is it’s connectivity to the Chicago region via rail and bus. But in 2019, more than half of Oak Park’s workforce drove alone to work, and less then a third of workers walked, biked, or took public transportation.
Everyone has the right to travel safely in Oak Park’s public spaces - including people with varying physical abilities.
Transportation equity is more than infrastructure - it’s about prioritizing the mobility and rights of everyone. In many communities, people of color utilize walking, biking, and public transit at higher rates than others, but experience less support and fewer amenities in their neighborhoods and along their routes.
Regular cycling and walking are not only fun, they are also associated with dramatically better health outcomes.
With more and more families and youth out cycling and walking, Bike Walk Oak Park is focused on ensuring our streets are safe and accessible for families and students traveling to and from our public schools.
The Greenways Plan is a network of streets that prioritize bicycle and pedestrian travel with infrastructure that calms and reduces vehicle traffic.
A temporary pilot initiative, due to COVID-19, responding to an increase in cyclists and pedestrians on streets and sidewalks. The Slow Streets Pilot was launched on August 3rd and ran through Oct. 16th, 2020.
