Greenways Plan
Adopted by the Village of Oak Park in 2015, the Greenways Plan is a network of side streets that:
prioritizes bicycle and pedestrian travel with infrastructure that calms and reduces vehicle traffic, and
creates an attractive, safe, and comfortable environment for cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
The Greenways Plan has not been implemented. Funding for a section around Oak Park and River Forest High School was scheduled to be constructed in the summer of 2020 but got postponed due to construction around the high school. Currently there is no clear indication from the Village that this portion of the Greenways Plan will be built.
Recent research into the effects of the pandemic-related investments in bicycle infrastructure indicates that better systems of bike lanes, crossings, and signage really do increase the rate of cycling. Bike Walk Oak Park will continue to advocate for the implementation of the Greenways Plan, funded through Oak Park's Capital Improvement Plan , in every budget cycle until the Oak Park Greenways Plan is fully realized.
